Vaping has been linked with lung problems that have, in some instances, resulted in the user needing to be placed on a breathing machine (ventilator) – and even death. On imaging studies of the lungs, the vaping illness looks like bacterial or viral pneumonia, but with no actual infection found in the patient. Investigators are referring to this as “severe pulmonary disease.” Parents should discuss the risks of vaping with their children as the enticing flavors and marketing of vaping products have drawn in many new users, including teenagers.
Currently, public health officials do not know what it is that is causing vaping illness. Researchers wrote the following: “[E]-cigarette aerosol is not harmless; it can expose users to substances known to have adverse health effects, including ultrafine particles, heavy metals, volatile organic compounds and other harmful ingredients.” The researchers wrote that the effects of the chemicals are not fully understood, even though the vaping / e-cigarette products are readily available for purchase.
There appears to be a heightened danger associated with vaping THC, although some people who have suffered vaping illness said that they did not vape THC.
WHO IS AT RISK?
Any person who uses a vaping device, including an e-cigarette, is at risk because researchers have not determined whether the cause of vaping illness is something in the vaping liquid or something associated with the device – or both. Thus, all people using vaping devices are at risk, irrespective of whether they are vaping nicotine or substances extracted from marijuana or hemp.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF VAPING ILLNESS?
Nausea, vomiting, fatigue, coughing and fever are some of the early symptoms of vaping illness. More serious symptoms include shortness of breath. Some people suffering vaping illness had to be given supplemental oxygen, and others required a ventilator to help them breathe.
