Bayer Facing Legal Action Amidst Claims that Roundup Causes Cancer

Pharmaceutical giant Bayer is facing legal action, and taking a financial hit, following claims that Roundup weed killer causes a type of cancer known as non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Bayer acquired agrochemical company Monsanto in 2018, obtaining the ownership of Roundup in the process. Roundup is an herbicide whose main active ingredient is the chemical glyphosate. Glyphosate, a very widely-used chemical in weed-killing products, is the alleged carcinogen in question.

So far, 11,200 lawsuits have been filed against Bayer in the United States based on claims that Roundup was the cause of the plaintiff’s cancer, reports Reuters. The first Roundup case that reached a verdict resulted in a $289 million verdict (eventually decreased to $78 million).

The second case to successfully reach a verdict against Bayer, involving a 70-year-old plaintiff who argued that Roundup caused his non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, is still awaiting a settlement agreement.

As described by ABC News, “The six-member jury in San Francisco federal civil court unanimously concluded on Tuesday that glyphosate… was a ‘substantial factor’ in [the] Sonoma resident’s non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.” The plaintiff has reportedly used Roundup products for about 30 years.

In this case, the jury is currently in the phase of determining Bayer’s liability, and will evaluate if the risks of using Roundup were known by the company and hidden from consumers.

In addition to the settlement payments, the legal action against Bayer has negatively affected the company’s shares. They are expected to face further legal and financial woes as the over 11,000 additional cases develop.
