How Common is Sexual Abuse in College?

Sexual abuse is a heinous crime that happens far too often. Sexual abusers prey upon some of the most vulnerable members of the community, including children, the elderly, the disabled, and students.

Sexual abuse and assault on college campuses, in particular, are prevalent. Below, our Michigan sexual abuse attorneys discuss sexual abuse and assault statistics related to college campuses, and discuss the sexual abuse lawsuits involving the University of Michigan (U of M) and Michigan State University (MSU).

Campus Sexual Assault

According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC), 27% of college women have experienced some form of unwanted sexual contact and nearly two-thirds of college students experience sexual harassment.

While this is a widespread problem across the entire country, the issue hits close to home here in Michigan with two of the state’s universities facing sexual abuse lawsuits.

In addition to the sexual abuse lawsuits involving former MSU physician Larry Nassar, the University of Michigan is now embroiled in its own sexual abuse controversy.

A former U of M physician, Robert E. Anderson, has been accused of sexual misconduct during medical examinations by several alumni. Although it’s suspected that the school knew about the abuse, it failed to remove Anderson from staff. Instead, U of M placed Anderson in another position where he would have the opportunity to harm more students.

If you or someone you love has suffered at the hands of Anderson, our team is here for you.
