Motorcycle Safety and Preparing for New Insurance Requirements in Michigan

Motorcycle

Summertime in Pure Michigan has finally arrived, and bikers everywhere are dusting off their motorcycles to hit the road. Biking is not only an exciting mode of transportation, but is also a way of living for many Michiganders. It is one of the top summer hobbies in the Great Lakes State, however, there are many dangers involved when it comes to motorcycles, for bikers and other drivers on the road alike. In fact, according to this Quick Facts sheet produced by the Michigan Secretary of State, more than 80% of motorcycle accidents result in injury or death for the motorcyclist.

Bikers can stay safe by following some basic tips:

  • Always wear a helmet, preferably one with a face shield.
  • Wear protective gear over your entire body, including eyewear, gloves, boots, pants, and a durable jacket.
  • Follow traffic laws like obeying posted speed limits and properly signaling when changing lanes.
  • Keep up with bike maintenance to ensure it is in good working order.
  • Only ride when you are sober and alert.
  • Stay educated by getting licensed and taking riding courses.
  • Review your insurance policy to maximize your benefits in the event you are involved in a motorcycle accident.

In the State of Michigan, no-fault insurance is mandatory in order to register a “motor vehicle.” The purpose of a no-fault policy is to provide benefits for injuries and damages arising out of a motor vehicle accident, regardless of who is at fault. Among the benefits provided for are lifetime medical benefits for any injuries reasonably or necessarily related to the accident.

The law differs, however, when it comes to motorcycles as the definition of a “motor vehicle” traditionally excluded motorcycles. In other words, motorcyclists were not required to purchase no-fault coverage. However, starting July 1, 2020, Michigan’s new No-Fault law takes effect and there will be new insurance requirements for motorcyclists.

Some highlights of the new law include:

  • Required minimal liability limits increased from $20,000/$40,000 to $50,000/$100,000.
  • Allowing all motorists to purchase insurance policies with reduced medical coverage.
  • Changes to the amount of no-fault benefits available to motorcyclists who are injured in an accident with a motor vehicle, including the elimination of guaranteed lifetime medical benefits.

It is important that you review your current policy for compliance with the new law and to ensure you will be financially protected in the event of an accident. Our experienced personal injury attorneys are prepared for the new law to take effect and know how to get you the maximum payout if you are injured in an accident.
