Grewal Law and Gruel Mills Nims & Pylman Attorneys Announce Agreements with MSU in the Wake of the February 2023 Mass Campus Shooting.
Attorneys Mick Grewal and Scott Weidenfeller of Grewal Law and William Azkoul of Gruel Mills Nims & Pylman announced today that they have reached settlements totaling $29.75 million on behalf of three survivors of the tragic on-campus shooting that took place at Michigan State University in 2023.
Three students were killed and five more were wounded when a gunman opened fire on MSU’s campus on February 13, 2023.
Grewal Law Founder and Managing Partner Mick Grewal and Senior Litigation Attorney Scott Weidenfeller represent Nathan Statly and Troy Forbush, both of whom sustained life-altering gunshot wounds. Gruel Mills Principal and Senior Litigation Attorney William Azkoul represents Chinese international student, Yukai “John” Hao, who sustained a life-altering gunshot wound in the back.
Nathan Statly:
Grewal Law Founder and Managing Partner Mick Grewal and Senior Litigation Attorney Scott Weidenfeller represent Nathan Statly, who sustained a life-altering gunshot wound to the head.
- Grewal Law secured a $14.25 million settlement for Statly, representing compensation for Nate’s physical injuries, pain and suffering, emotional harm, and impairment and limitation.
- Statly, at the time a junior studying environmental biology and zoology at MSU, was shot in the head, resulting in profound brain injuries requiring extensive medical treatment and ongoing care.
Yukai "John" Hao:
Gruel Mills Attorney William Azkoul, of Grand Rapids, represents Yukai "John" Hao, who sustained life-altering gunshot wounds requiring extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation.
- Gruel Mills secured a $13 million settlement for Hao, representing compensation for his physical injuries, pain and suffering, emotional harm, and impairment and limitation. MSU has additionally agreed to waive tuition, room, and board, and provide health insurance for Hao, throughout the completion of both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from MSU.
- At the time of the shooting, Hao was a junior and studying economics at MSU. He was left paralyzed from the chest down after being struck by a bullet in his back.
Troy Forbush:
Grewal Law Founder and Managing Partner Mick Grewal and Senior Litigation Attorney Scott Weidenfeller represent Troy Forbush, who sustained a life-altering gunshot wound to the chest.
- Grewal Law secured a $2.5 million settlement for Forbush, representing compensation for his physical injuries, pain and suffering, emotional harm, and impairment and limitation.
- Forbush was a junior pursuing a double major in music education and vocal performance at MSU at the time. He was shot in the chest and suffered a serious lung injury, resulting in surgery and extensive rehabilitative therapy.
