Detroit Medical Center and its Sinai-Grace Hospital have faced a wave of recent sexual assault lawsuits filed by patients who allege that former nurse Wilfredo Figueroa-Berrios sexually abused them. How Did Figueroa-Berrios Allegedly Assault His Victims?
The methods used by former Detroit Medical Center Sinai-Grace Hospital nurse Wilfredo Figuero-Berrios to sexually assault his patients are as varied as they are shocking, according to official complaints and lawsuits.
In one case from July 2025, the plaintiff claims that he performed an unnecessary pap smear to sexually molest her. She then states that he drugged her with some form of sedative before sexually assaulting her while in a sedated state. Police investigators used a rape kit when she immediately reported the assault to the police, and the kit tested positive.
Back in 2019, Figueroa-Berrios was arrested for assault and apparently posted unusual, sexually suggestive content on his social media accounts. He had also been terminated from another hospital before working at Sinai-Grace after numerous sexual misconduct complaints were filed against him. At this point, though, it is not known when his first act of alleged sexual violence was carried out against a patient.
Holding Sinai-Grace Hospital Accountable
Detroit Medical Center’s Sinai-Grace Hospital, VHS of Michigan (a healthcare provider associated with it), and Tenet Healthcare (the hospital’s parent company) have all been named as defendants in many of the sexual assault lawsuits stemming from Figueroa-Berrios’s alleged actions. The complaints state that Sinai-Grace knew or reasonably should have known that he could be a danger to patients due to his past arrest and termination. Yet the healthcare institution was seemingly unaware of his past when he was hired.
In an official statement from Sinai-Grace that was provided to CBS News Detroit, the healthcare organization explained that it saw “no indication of concern” during its pre-hiring screening process for Figueroa-Berrios.
