Serious Health Risks Linked to Recalled Abbott Glucose Monitor Sensors

Certain Abbott FreeStyle Libre 3 and FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus sensors have been linked to dangerous glucose-monitoring errors that can put users at risk of severe diabetic complications. 

According to Abbott and the FDA, some sensors may display glucose readings that are lower than a user’s actual blood glucose level, which can lead people to make the wrong treatment decisions. The FDA has classified the action as a Class I recall, the agency’s most serious type of recall, and says the devices may cause serious injury or death if they continue to be used.

Abbott initially announced the device correction in November 2025 after internal testing found that certain sensors could provide incorrect low readings. The FDA first communicated the issue in an Early Alert in December 2025 and later updated the recall notice in February 2026 with additional adverse-event information and a clarified list of affected lots. As of January 2026, Abbott had reported 860 serious injuries and 7 deaths associated with the problem.
