Serious Brain Tumor Risks Linked to Depo-Provera
Depo-Provera lawsuits focus on reports that medroxyprogesterone acetate, the active ingredient in Depo-Provera and Depo-SubQ Provera 104, may increase the risk of meningioma after repeated use, especially long-term use. Meningiomas are often non-cancerous, but they can still be serious. Depending on their size and location, they may press on the brain, affect vision or cognition, cause seizures or chronic headaches, and require surgery, radiation, or long-term monitoring.
This issue has drawn attention from regulators, researchers, and courts. For example:
- A 2024 BMJ study found that women using Depo-Provera for over a year were 5.6x more likely to develop a brain tumor, especially meningiomas, than those who hadn’t used the drug.
- The European Medicines Agency said in September 2024 that available data showed increased meningioma risk with high-dose medroxyprogesterone acetate used for several years, including injectable products.
- Pfizer’s labeling now warns about meningioma and instructs that Depo-Provera CI should be discontinued if meningioma is diagnosed
Federal Depo-Provera lawsuits have been centralized in an MDL in the Northern District of Florida. In an MDL, similar federal lawsuits are coordinated before one court for pretrial proceedings, but each plaintiff keeps an individual case and the right to seek compensation based on her own injuries.
Women who developed meningiomas after Depo-Provera use have reported injuries and complications such as:
- Severe or persistent headaches
- Vision changes or vision loss
- Seizures
- Memory problems or cognitive changes
- Weakness, balance problems, or other neurological symptoms
- Brain surgery, radiation, or other invasive treatment
- Lasting neurological impairment
Do I Have a Depo-Provera Lawsuit?
Depo-Provera cases are generally being brought by women who used the birth control shot repeatedly over time and were later diagnosed with a meningioma, often after months or years of use. While every case must be evaluated on its own facts, the strongest claims usually involve longer-term use, a confirmed diagnosis, and treatment such as surgery, radiation, or ongoing neurological care.
You may have a case worth reviewing if:
- You received Depo-Provera, Depo-SubQ Provera 104, or another medroxyprogesterone acetate injection
- You used the drug for at least 12 months, which often means four or more injections
- You were later diagnosed with a meningioma
- The diagnosis came during use or after you stopped using the drug
- You required monitoring, neurosurgery, radiation, or other treatment
- You experienced symptoms such as severe headaches, vision changes, seizures, memory problems, or other neurological issues
- You have medical or pharmacy records showing your injection history and diagnosis
Many women have questions about timing, especially if they stopped Depo-Provera before the tumor was found. That does not automatically rule out a claim. What matters is the product history, the diagnosis, and whether the medical record supports a connection between the use of the drug and the injury.
If you are not sure whether you qualify, our attorneys can review your history and explain whether your case fits the litigation.

Which Drugs Are Involved?
The drugs most discussed in this litigation include:
- Depo-Provera
- Depo-SubQ Provera 104
- Generic medroxyprogesterone acetate injections
- Other high-dose medroxyprogesterone acetate products, depending on the facts
Because many of these claims center on the active ingredient rather than branding alone, product history matters. Some women may have claims involving brand-name injections, while others may have received generic versions or other formulations containing high-dose medroxyprogesterone acetate.
What Are These Lawsuits Alleging?
At the center of these lawsuits is whether Pfizer and other manufacturers gave women and their doctors adequate warning about the risk of meningioma associated with medroxyprogesterone acetate injections. Plaintiffs allege they used Depo-Provera or similar products, later developed meningiomas, and were not adequately warned about that risk beforehand.
Depending on the facts, claims may allege:
- Failure to warn about meningioma risk
- Negligence in safety monitoring, labeling, or post-market response
- Defective marketing or incomplete risk information
- Other pharmaceutical product liability claims supported by the medical evidence and case history
Compensation in Depo-Provera Lawsuits
If a claim is successful, compensation may include damages for:
- Medical bills and specialist care
- Neurosurgery, hospitalization, radiation, and follow-up treatment
- Future medical needs and monitoring
- Lost income and reduced earning capacity
- Pain and suffering
- Lasting neurological or vision-related impairment
- Wrongful death damages for surviving family members in fatal cases
Case value usually rises with the seriousness of the diagnosis, the treatment required, and the lasting effect on a woman’s health and daily life. Cases involving brain surgery, permanent neurological problems, vision loss, or major long-term medical consequences are generally more serious than claims involving a tumor with limited lasting effects.
