Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Robert E. Anderson
As of February 2020, multiple former patients have come forward claiming that Robert E. Anderson sexually abused them, with most alleged instances of abuse happening between 1970 and 1990. For over 50 years, the University of Michigan entrusted Anderson with medical care for U of M college athletes, as well as other students at the University of Michigan Student Health Service center.
According to reports, the University of Michigan was first alerted to the alleged abuse in July 2018, when U of M alumnus Roger Stone sent an essay to school officials that detailed his account of sexual assault. Now retired and living in Palm Springs, Roger Stone claimed that in June 1971, Anderson grabbed Stone’s hand during a medical exam and forced him to touch his genitals. After reading Stone’s essay, U of M officials claim that they promptly opened an investigation.
So far, multiple alleged victims have told U of M officials that Robert Anderson harmed them in the following ways:
- Sexual assault and rape
- Groping
- Unnecessary medical exams
- Sexual misconduct

Did the University of Michigan Know About the Abuse?
Although the University of Michigan officials claim that they were unaware of Anderson’s alleged actions, Roger Stone stated that the school actually knew about the abuse for many years. According to Stone, a U of M detective told him that Anderson was moved from his post as head of the Student Health Service due to repeated sex abuse complaints. Shortly after leaving the Student Health Service, the U of M made him the official sports team physician instead, potentially putting hundreds of students at risk.
There is little that can compensate for the horrors of sexual abuse. However, if you or a family member were abused or assaulted by Robert E. Anderson, or if you have information about his alleged abuse of patients (including student-athletes), please call Grewal Law PLLC for a free case review.
