Earlier this month, a federal jury unanimously found former New York urologist Darius Paduch guilty for the sexual abuse of seven patients, five of whom were minors at the time.

Paduch was indicted in April of last year on multiple charges of sexual abuse and assault, including coercing minor victims to travel across state lines for the purposes of unlawful sexual activity. He is now awaiting sentencing scheduled for mid-August.

The conviction is a step towards justice for survivors of sexual abuse. Over 200 former patients of Paduch are now pursuing another avenue of justice in the form of civil litigation against the doctor and the hospitals where he was employed, including New York Presbyterian, Weill Cornell Medical Center, and Northwell Health.

One lawsuit additionally claims that victims were subjected to unnecessary medical procedures without anesthetic as a means sexual gratification. Paduch would then allegedly overprescribe opioids to increase dependence on him so that he could continue abusing his patients.

The institutions face allegations stating that they failed to take action against the doctor despite being reportedly aware of the sexual abuse, allowing him to continue treating patients and further sexually abusing patients.
