Driving on a Suspended License

Over 100 Years of Collective Experience On Your Side.

Michigan Driving on a Suspended License Lawyer

The Michigan Driver Responsibility Law places heavy penalties on individuals who drive on a suspended license. Getting a DWLS (driving while license is suspended) or a DWLR (driving while license is suspended revoked) conviction can delay the restoration of your license by a significant period of time.

Not having the ability to drive can impact your everyday life including transporting your children, getting back and forth to work, and running day to day errands. While working as your Michigan criminal defense lawyer, we will help you navigate the system, helping you build a defense for driving on a suspended license to get you back on the road sooner.

Contact us right away to increase your odds of success. Our attorneys at Grewal Law PLLC will work with you to defend against a DWLS or DWLR charge to help get your license reinstated.

Penalties if Convicted for Driving With a Suspended License

Depending on if this is your first or second offense, there are different penalties for a DWLS charge. A second offense is quantified as taking place within seven years of your first offense.

First offense convictions include the following penalties:

  • Up to 93 days in jail
  • Fines of up to $500
  • Cancellation of registration plates
  • Continued license suspension
  • One-year probation
  • Driver’s responsibility fees of $1,000

Second offense convictions include the following penalties:

  • One-year in jail
  • Fines up to $1,000
  • Cancellation of registration plates
  • Continued license suspension
  • Two-years’ probation
  • Driver’s responsibility fees of $1,000

There are even harsher penalties if you cause injury or death to someone while driving with a suspended license. These include five to fifteen years in jail along with increased fines and probation periods. When facing any of these charges, our Michigan criminal defense lawyers can help you find a solution in your case.

Building a Defense

It is imperative to do a thorough investigation while building your defense against DWLS or DWLR charges to avoid these harsh penalties. We will work with you to analyze the evidence being brought against you to find any mistakes that may have been made by law enforcement or the prosecution.

From not receiving proper notification regarding your license suspension to being improperly stopped by police, we will look for facts to help build your case. Sometimes you may be forced to drive in the case of an emergency, so we will outline any circumstances where you were required to drive even though your license was not valid.

We will work to receive the most optimum results in your case. Options include having your license fully restored to having the length of your suspension reduced. In some cases, we may even be able to get your charges completely dropped.
