Operating Under the Influence of Liquor (OUIL) Lawyer in Michigan

It can be hard to understand the different drunk driving charges. One such charge that many people are not familiar with is an OUIL charge (Operating Under the Influence of Intoxicating Liquor). The charges are brought when you accused of operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.

Law enforcement do not need to prove your blood alcohol level (BAC) was at .08 percent or higher which is the legal limit for drunk driving. Instead, they only need to show you were influenced by alcohol no matter what levels were actually present in your system. Our experienced Michigan DUI lawyers at Grewal Law PLLC will help you understand these charges and will build your defense against the prosecution’s case.

OUIL Charges

In Michigan, the legal limit for your BAC is .08%, however, any trace of alcohol within your system could prompt the police to charge you with an OUIL. The officer only has to state he or she believes your driving was influenced by the consumption of alcoholic substances. Most often, you will end up facing an OWI (Operating While Intoxicated) charge.

Our drunk driving defense lawyers are here to help you fight these charges in Lansing, East Lansing, Okemos, and all of the surrounding areas. We can help you build your case against the prosecution to avoid a conviction.

Penalties if Convicted

If you are convicted of an OUIL or OWI the penalties can be harsh. First-time offenders may face the following punishments:

  • A fine of up to $500
  • Spending up to 93 days in jail
  • Required community service up to 360 hours
  • License suspension for up to 180 days
  • 6 points on your driver’s license

Besides first-time offenders, if you have already been convicted of two or more alcohol related driving offenses you could face a felony charge related to the OUIL (Operating Under the Influence of Liquor). Serious jail time for this conviction includes up to five years in prison. Contact our drunk driving defense attorneys today to help you understand the possible penalties you are facing in your case.
